How to set up a proxy in Telegram

Step-by-step SOCKS5 and MTProto setup in Telegram on Android, iOS, Windows and macOS: where the menus are, how to build a tg://socks link for your team and why a proxy gets stuck on "Connecting".

How to set up a proxy in Telegram is a two-minute job on any device: the messenger has built-in support for SOCKS5 and MTProto, so no third-party software is needed. A proxy lets you run several accounts from different IPs, work with bots and channels from the right region or keep a stable connection inside a corporate network.

Below you will find instructions for Android, iOS and Telegram Desktop, the link format for one-click setup and a breakdown of the errors that leave a proxy stuck on "Connecting". Any ProxyFarm SOCKS5 proxy works with no extra server-side configuration.

How to set up a proxy in Telegram: which protocols are supported

Telegram supports three proxy types, and availability depends on the platform.

At ProxyFarm, SOCKS5 and HTTP(S) run on the same port of every proxy, so the same address works for Desktop and the mobile apps alike. Connection details arrive in your dashboard 2 minutes after payment.

Setting up a proxy in Telegram on Android

  1. Open Telegram, tap the three lines in the top left corner and go to Settings.
  2. Choose Data and Storage and scroll down to Proxy Settings.
  3. Tap Add Proxy and select the SOCKS5 type.
  4. Fill in the fields: Server is the IP address from your dashboard, Port is the port number, Username and Password are your login details. If authentication is set up by IP whitelist, leave the username and password empty.
  5. Tap the checkmark in the top right corner to save.
  6. Turn on the Use Proxy toggle. The added server will show a "Connected" status and a ping in milliseconds.

You can keep several proxies in the list and switch between them with one tap, which is handy if you have separate addresses for different accounts. MTProto setup is identical, except that you fill in the Secret field instead of a username and password.

Setup on iPhone and iPad

  1. Open Settings (the gear icon in the bottom right).
  2. Go to Data and Storage, then Proxy.
  3. Tap Add Proxy and choose SOCKS5.
  4. Enter the server, port, username and password. Tap Done.
  5. Turn on the Use Proxy toggle at the top of the screen.

On iOS Telegram tests the connection immediately and shows "Available" or "Unavailable" next to each server. If the status does not change for more than 10 seconds, check the port and username; that is where the mistake usually is.

iOS does not give apps system-wide access to network settings, so a proxy added in Telegram works only inside Telegram. Your browser and other apps continue to go online directly.

Telegram Desktop on Windows, macOS and Linux

  1. Open Settings from the three-line menu.
  2. Go to Advanced, find the Network and proxy block and click Connection type.
  3. Select Use custom proxy, then Add proxy.
  4. Pick the type: SOCKS5, HTTP or MTProto. Fill in the address, port and login details.
  5. Save. The same window has a Use proxy for calls checkbox; turn it on if voice calls should also go through the proxy.

Telegram Desktop shows a shield icon in the bottom left corner when a proxy is active. Clicking it opens the server list so you can quickly switch or disable the proxy. This is the only Telegram version with HTTP proxy support, but for compatibility with mobile devices it is simpler to use SOCKS5 everywhere.

The tg://socks link: adding SOCKS5 to Telegram in one click

To avoid typing the details by hand on every device, Telegram supports special links. When you tap one, the app itself offers to add the proxy. The format for SOCKS5:

tg://socks?server=ADDRESS&port=PORT&user=USERNAME&pass=PASSWORD

The same link in web form, so it can be sent to a chat or opened from a browser:

https://t.me/socks?server=ADDRESS&port=PORT&user=USERNAME&pass=PASSWORD

MTProto uses a different path and a secret parameter instead of a username and password:

tg://proxy?server=ADDRESS&port=PORT&secret=SECRET

A ready-made link is convenient to drop into a private team chat: everyone taps it, confirms, and the proxy is added. If the password contains characters such as @, & or #, they must be URL-encoded (@ becomes %40, for instance), otherwise Telegram will parse the link incorrectly.

Common errors: the Telegram proxy won't connect

SymptomCauseWhat to do
Endless "Connecting" statusWrong port or protocol, for example an HTTP port entered with the SOCKS5 typeCompare the details with your dashboard; at ProxyFarm SOCKS5 and HTTP share one port, so double-check the number itself
"Unavailable" right after entering the detailsTypo in the username or password, or your IP is not on the whitelistCopy the username and password again or add your current IP to the whitelist in the dashboard
Works on the computer, not on the phoneThe phone has the HTTP type selected, which mobile Telegram does not supportSwitch the type to SOCKS5
Connection drops every few minutesA mobile proxy with timer rotation: the session is re-established on every IP changeIncrease the rotation interval or use a static IPv4
Messages go through, calls don'tThe "Use proxy for calls" checkbox is off, or the proxy does not pass UDPTurn on the checkbox in Desktop; calls need SOCKS5 with UDP support
Media loads slowlyAn overloaded shared channel or a high ping to the serverPick a proxy geographically closer to you or a dedicated address

Before changing any settings, test the proxy on the proxy checker page: if it responds there, the problem is in the details entered in Telegram.

Which proxy to choose for Telegram

To add a SOCKS5 proxy to Telegram on all your devices at once, take an address that supports the protocol; at ProxyFarm every plan does. For a single account and stable operation a dedicated IPv4 from 79 ₽ (≈ $0.85) a month is enough: a static address, SOCKS5, low ping. If you run several accounts, take a separate IPv4 for each one, since Telegram links accounts by the IP they were registered from and operate on.

For bulk registrations and running accounts from a phone, mobile proxies from 490 ₽ (≈ $5) a month fit better: a carrier IP is seen as an ordinary subscriber, and rotation by link gives a fresh IP for every account. A detailed breakdown of scenarios and ready-made plans is on the proxies for Telegram page.

Any address can be tested before you pay: a mobile channel is issued free for 1 hour with no card, and an IP that does not fit is replaced within the first 24 hours.

Why doesn't Telegram on my phone accept an HTTP proxy?

The mobile versions of Telegram for Android and iOS support only SOCKS5 and MTProto; HTTP is not implemented there. Use the same address and port but select the SOCKS5 type. At ProxyFarm both protocols run on the same port.

What is an MTProto proxy and is it better than SOCKS5?

MTProto is Telegram's own protocol. Its traffic looks like ordinary HTTPS, and a secret is used instead of a username and password. It is handy on networks with strict firewall rules, but it works only with Telegram. SOCKS5 is universal: one proxy serves Telegram, your browser and other programs alike.

Can I use one proxy on my phone and computer at the same time?

Yes, as long as both devices use the same Telegram account. For different accounts it is better to take separate addresses: Telegram records the IP of active sessions, and several accounts on one address may be linked to each other.

Will Telegram calls work through a proxy?

Yes, on two conditions: the "Use proxy for calls" checkbox is turned on in Telegram Desktop, and the proxy passes UDP traffic. Telegram voice runs over UDP, so an HTTP proxy will not work for calls; only SOCKS5 will.
